Is there a patch?

Yes, you can get it right here.

Is there an experience cap?

No, however, Huggies_Dragon informs me that the Nameless One no longer accrues experience points after 12,000,000. Besides, don't you have better things to do?

How do I become a priest?

You can't.

Can I multiclass?

No.

Which factions can I join?

See the dark of the factions for more information and details on how to join.

How do I change professions?

You have to talk to people; if you want to become a thief, you talk to a thief.

You can change class as many times as you want; if you spoke to a trainer previously (i.e., Mebbeth), and afterwards changed professions, you can always talk to that trainer again to change back (i.e., if you changed to Mage after talking to Mebbeth, then changed to Fighter, you can still talk to Mebbeth to change to Mage again).

How do I become a mage?

Mage trainers:

  • Speak to Old Mebbeth the Midwife, located in the Midwife's Hut in Ragpicker's Square. (See the walkthrough for complete details.)
  • Speak to Sebastian, located near the entrance to the Lower Ward.
  • Speak to Lady Thorncombe, located in the public sensorium of the Civic Festhall. (Lady Thorncombe will ignore you at first; speak to Salabesh the Onyx who is the mage standing just outside the Civic Festhall, then talk to Lady Thorncombe again).
  • Kitla in the Traitor's Gate Tavern in Curst.

How do I become a fighter?

You start the game as a fighter, but if you have changed professions and then want to become a fighter again, talk to any of the trainers, or if you have Dak'kon in your party, you can ask him to lead you back to the way of the warrior.

Fighter trainers:

  • Porphiron, near the Flophouse in the Hive.
  • Korur, near the entrance to the Lower Ward.
  • Qui-Sai, standing inside the northernmost room, near the throne in the Civic Festhall. (See the walkthrough for details on how to get him to train you.)
  • Marquez, inside the Traitor's Gate Tavern in Curst.

Note: There have been reports of a bug with reaching level 21 as a fighter; attacks drop to 1/round and the to hit modifier disappears. Hopefully a patch will remedy this. If you don't want to wait for a patch, you can download a trainer and use it to fix things.

Update: Get the patch!

How do I become a thief?

Thief trainers:

  • Ratbone, located in Ragpicker's Square, standing outside Shargrave's Kip.
  • Lenny, located near the Marketplace in the Lower Ward.
  • Eli Havelock, standing in the shadows next to the Brothel.
  • Nabat, in the Traitor's Gate Tavern in Curst. Talk to Annah if she is in your party to train your thief skills.

I can't level up! Is this a bug?

No, this is not a bug. You are wearing a cursed item, the Cursed Gauntlets of Teeth. Find someone to cast Remove Curse on you and you will be able to level up. I believe Hargrimm the Bleak in the Dead Nations does these things, assuming you did his quests and didn't kill him. Any factions you join should offer Remove Curse, among other types of aid.

Update: Okay, maybe this is a bug. Get the patch. Post-patch, Mebbeth can cast Remove Curse, instead of just selling it to you.

How do I become Lawful Good?

Always speak the truth, do not break any vows, do quests without asking for compensation.

How do I become Chaotic?

Lie, every chance you get, do the opposite of what you promised.

How do I become Chaotic?

Kill innocent people, lie, steal, treat your companions horribly.

Where do I get armor (i.e., chainmail) for the Nameless One?

You don't get armor for him. Armor is provided in the form of tattoos, rings, bracelets, earrings. You can buy tattoos from Fell's Tattoo Parlor located near the Smoldering Corpse Bar and protective jewelry from various merchants.

Where do I get armor for my party members?

You can buy clothes from Goncalves the Tailor, located in the Clerk's Ward. Only Annah and Fall-from-Grace seem to have selections there.

What is UnderSigil?

It's just a place where you can kill lots of monsters and get exp. There are entrances to Undersigil in the Clerk's Ward. In rare cases, monsters called Greater Glabrezu show up and they give up lots of exp, and sometimes, rare items. (You will only see Greater Glabrezu after you return to Sigil from Curst.)

Where are the ranged weapons?

There aren't any that the Nameless One can use. Nordom is the only one who can use them. There are certain spells that act like ranged weapons (i.e., magic missiles).

I seem to have lost my party members!

This happens sometimes, like when you get mazed or you go to a place that only you can go. Your party members should be in the same spot you left them just before you left. You will have to talk to them again to get them to join. Remember that they won't show up on the map because they're now neutral.

My game slows to a crawl after I play for an hour!

This is a bug, which may or may not be remedied by a full install. See the full install guide in the Hints & Tips section. For myself, I've done the full install and copying the ar*.bif files to the cache folder, and I've had no more slowdown problems.

I've joined the Godsmen, but in order to progress, it looks like I might have to become a Sensate, but I don't want to.

Talk to Aelwyn, located at a cafe on the east side of the Clerk's Ward. Help her out and she'll tell you you were a Sensate in a previous incarnation. Tell Splinter at the Civic Festhall and he'll let you in.

Update: Star Moose tells me that you do not, in fact, have to rejoin the Sensates to speak to let you into the Sensate-only areas. Apparently if you ask Splinter about Ravel, he will tell you that Quell knows about her. You should have a new option to ask Splinter to take you there (the private sensorium). You should also be able to buy stuff from Splinter now, albeit at inflated prices.

Why not just rejoin the Sensates? You'll remain in your previous faction, and buying stuff from Splinter will be cheaper.

I don't seem to be able to join the Xaositects!

You have to be of a Chaotic alignment to join.

What do you do with the Lady of Pain rag doll?

If you mock it or worship it in public, the Lady of Pain comes and boots your ass into a maze; if you've already been mazed, she kills you permanently. Your alignment changes, too.

How do I get into the Foundry?

Run an errand for Giltspur, the merchant standing just outside the Marketplace in the Lower Ward. If you have a receipt, you can also use this to get inside. You have to speak to one of the guards.

You can get a Godsmen Receipt from finding a legacy either from Deionarra, through the Longing sensory stone in the private sensorium in the Civic Festhall or from reading the Dodecahedron in your old room in the Civic Festhall dormitory. You have to take the legacies to the Advocate in Clerk's Ward.

I can't get Annah to join.

She won't join you until you find the Bronze Sphere for Pharod.

Where do I get a hammer and prybar to fix the Alley of Lingering Sighs?

There's a hammer next to the deceased dabus in the house; you can buy a prybar or hammer from one of the merchants in the Hive market. If you're strapped for cash, you can go back to the Mortuary (talk to Pox) and grab one from one of the chests (no, I don't know which one). You can kill another dabus for a hammer (and risk the Lady of Pain's wrath or change alignment).

If you're a mage or thief, you don't have to be able to use the hammer and prybar, just have them in your inventory.

How do I see the Silent King?

Note: This answer is only if you want to see the guy, and not for doing any quests like getting out of the Dead Nations.

The non-violent way: If you have an extremely high charisma, talk to Stale Mary and tell her why you need to see him.
The messy way: Either pickpocket Hargrimm for the keys to the Silent King's throne room or kill him for it. Both will involve having to kill numerous undead, who are quite rightly upset.

How do I view all the movies?

In the options menu, there is a Movies button. And no, I don't know how to mess with torment.ini to see all of them. I don't know how to rip them, either.

Update to how to view movies; edit your torment.ini file, [MOVIES] section to look like the one below (copy and paste):

Fall-from-Grace keeps wasting her healing spells on me, and getting beat up when she heals people in the middle of a battle.

Turn off Party AI.

How do I use the Corpse Note from Corpse #1201?

You do it in the order as the number on the corpse; that is, 1-2-0-1. Numbers correspond to the number of marks on each corner.

How do I use the Decanter of Endless Water?

Speak to Glyve, who is a stone face in the Weeping Catacombs. He's near the middle, a little to the west. He will then tell you to talk to Nemelle, who's near a cafe in the southwestern part of the Clerk's Ward.

Who and where are the NPCs I can get to join me?

Check out the dark of the cutters.

How do I get out of Baator?

Talk to the Pillar of Skulls and get your answer(s). If your INT is not high enough, you didn't get to ask Fhjull Forktongue how to get out. If you were smart enough, however, and already asked Fhjull, the option to ask the Pillar doesn't show up. In any case, however you got the answer, go back to the first Baator screen and go to the west side. If you look at the overhead map, you'll see that a large line of boulders almost bisects the screen. Go to the southwest section all the way to the left. You see a dark cleft there with some cobwebs. Click there, near where the ground is littered with black pieces of rock. The text dialogue window should pop up and an option for you to activate the portal. See the map.

Where do I find Zombie #42?

It's been a while, so said zombie has now slimmed down to a skeleton. It's somewhere on the 3rd floor.

Is there a way to get Morte a skeleton (body)?

No. You'll see why as you progress through the game.

How do I dismantle the Greater Skeletons in the Mortuary?

You have to have a high enough Intelligence to figure it out. Examine the Greater Skeleton's armor. You should have a choice to examine it more carefully; pick the option that lets you rub out the warding enchantment first. They drop their magic armor which you can use to learn the 1st level spells Shield and Armor, or you can just sell them for some jink.

Where is the Lady's Ward and the Guildhall Ward?

Only the Lower and Clerk's Ward areas are in the game.

How do I read Fall-from-Grace's diary?

I don't know, I don't think you can; and shouldn't you respect other people's privacy? Any cutters out there know?

How do I use Dak'kon's Unbroken Circle of Zerthimon?

You must be a mage; talk to Dak'kon and ask him about his teachings. He will show you the Circle; go into his inventory, right-click on it and use it. Examine the Circle and read it. Then talk to Dak'kon about what you learned. Repeat this process until your Intelligence/Wisdom scores limit you or until you hit the Eighth Circle (I think you need at least a 19 Int, 19 Wis). Dak'kon's stats will go up permanently if you can teach the Eighth Circle to him.

Where do I get Power Word Kill?

Well, first you have to get the Tome of Pestilential Thought from Mantuok, a wererat mage under the wrecked house in the Lower Ward. The entrance is covered by a slab near the middle. You can either kill Mantuok through brute force/magic or give him a piece of poisoned cheese that you can get in the Marketplace. The book is on his body.

Talk to the tome to use it. It'll want you to sell a party member into slavery (according to reports, only Nordom will let you do that, others will attack you). Then it'll want you to kill a party member through brute force. Bear in mind that your alignment will change for the worse. And as far as I know, you cannot get the sold party member back.

Update on Power Word Kill; Christian F. N. tells me you can sell Dak'kon into slavery without him turning on you.

Update on selling NPCs into slavery; Blair W. tells me of the following NPC reactions to being sold into slavery: Annah attacks you, Fall-from-Grace refuses to be sold, but Morte can be sold, albeit kicking and screaming all the way.

Someone else told me that if you kill Vrishika (the owner of the Curiosity Shoppe), the NPC you sold will come back. I have not confirmed this. Whoever sent me this hint, please e-mail me for proper credit.

Power Word Blind is also sold by Splinter and Lady Thorncombe in the Civic Festhall, for a pretty hefty hunk of jink. Quell also sells it, if your Charisma is high enough. Star Moose tells me a high Charisma is not needed, but if I recall, Quell would not sell anything to me, although I was a fighter at the time, so you may first have to become a mage first before buying from him. Or it could be that he was pissed off at me for eating his candy.

In Carceri, in the warehouse, there is an Ancient Scroll which is the Wish Spell; using it to get more spells will get you Power Word Kill. I think you have to be a mage in order to use it.

Is there any other ending other than the Nameless One going to fight in the Blood War?

As far as I know, no. You have different ways of ending the game, but the poor Nameless One always ends up in the Blood War.

Is there a way to leave your party out of harm's way, without taking him/her out of the group?

Yep. Just make sure you can't see him any more (fog of war is concealing them). This helps for when you don't want certain NPCs to see your party members (or vice versa).

It's late in the game and I want to get lots of exp!

Well, it depends on how late. If you're in Carceri, keep fighting gehreleths (14,000 exp). If you're back in Sigil, visit Undersigil and try finding Greater Glabrezu. Also, doing everything by yourself (Nameless One in your party only), means your exp is not shared.

I really want to use Celestial Fire, but my alignment seems to have changed, and I can't use it!

I'm afraid that if you already did the majority of the quests in Sigil, there's no way of changing your alignment. Get the Entropy Blade (you have to give the Modron Cube to Coaxmetal the golem in the Siege Tower, when you get back to Sigil from Curst). Want to know how to get into the Siege Tower?

Update: Sir Bob tells me that you might still be able to become Lawful Good at the end of the game; when you finish your business in the Maze of Reflections, tell Deionarra how she died. I have not confirmed this, but this action should raise you to Lawful Good (this is assuming that you asked the Practical Incarnation why Deionarra had to die, otherwise the option doesn't come up).

How do I use the Bronze Sphere at the end?

Well, you have to have it in your inventory when you get to the Maze of Reflections. Then, talk to first the Practical Incarnation and ask him about why he wanted Pharod to find the Bronze Sphere. Then talk to the Good Incarnation, and ask him why there are only three incarnations. There will be a new question, asking if perhaps the first incarnation is also buried in your mind. You should now be able to use the Sphere. Please note that all of this requires that your Intelligence be high enough. Use the kessegs you got from Fjhull Forktongue (you did get those, right?).

Is there any cheat for Torment?

Yep, TeamBG has a trainer available for download. Please don't use it if it's your first game; you'll get much more satisfaction if you play it without cheats. Of course, we're not responsible for what happens if using this trainer screws up your computer.

How do I get out of Ravel's maze?

Go to the upperleft of the screen; you'll see a portal, but don't use it. As you approach it, you should get a dialog option to get out.

I'm back in Sigil now, is there any way to revisit the other Planes?

No.

Update: A-P Liedes tells me it is possible to revisit other planes again by cheating. You need to edit BHANKY and UPORTAL back into your inventory, and use them as you did before. The other planes appear as they did the first time, although you seem to skip Ravel's Maze.

Note: Completed quests will stay completed; hence, in order to get out of Curst again, you can't do the word puzzle quest. Instead, you have to go to the dump and go to Curst Underground that way.

How do I get into the Siege Tower?

Go into the Marketplace and talk to Lazlo. He is tending the furnace near his father's (Cinder) stall. Talk to him and ask him about the Lower Ward, then ask him if he has seen anything come go them; he should then tell you what he overheard them saying. You will reply by saying that perhaps the way to enter the tower is by not wanting to.

Where are the swords?

As far as I know, there are only two swords in the game: Celestial Fire, which you have to give back to its owner, usable only by Lawful Good. The other is the Entropic Blade, which the Iron Golem gives you after you return to Sigil from traveling the planes.

I cannot get into the Trash Warrens!

You need a piece of Junk. You find a few of these lying around in various cabinets and shelves in the Mortuary, one in the room where you confront the portal extortionists, and I'm sure there are some in other places. You only need one piece (they're stackable), and any piece of Junk will do.

I pissed off Penn (the Print Shop Guy) and now his door is locked!

Whoops. You need this guy to do a few quests, but that's okay; none of the quests except one is vital to progressing the plot. If you needed to see Penn to get love letters for Juliette, get and install the patch. When you have done that, go see Montague (Juliette's fiance) and pick a fight with him -- you should get an option to explain the whole ruse to him and you get your exp. Go talk to Juliette again and get the rest of your exp and her help.

The other quests are helping Giltspur get some handbills printed and joining the Anarchists. I don't think you'll be able to finish Giltspur's quest, but there is another way of joining the Anarchists (talk to Leena in the Warehouse after you help Bedai Lihn).

How do I get out of the Player's Maze?

See the walkthrough.

Where can I store things?

You can store things in any container you find, although I recommend that you store them in a place that you remember, like the shelves in Nameless One's old room in the Civic Festhall, or the barrel Lenny stands next to in the Lower Ward. As long as you put them in a container, they won't disappear.

Where is the Evil Wizard Construct?

The Evil Wizard Construct is in the Modron Maze, ONLY on the Hard difficulty level. You have to talk to the modron engineer to do this.

The modron engineer is in the engineering room; if it is the first time you are in the Modron Maze, you have to complete the maze before you can find the engineering room. Otherwise, the entrance is across from the door to the maze.

What do I do with this stuff (intestines, skulls)?

You can safely get rid of the skulls you find, like the human and wererat ones. However, if you should come across a unique skull, you should keep it. You'll need it later. As for your intestines, once you find and get Ignus in your party, he'll find a use for it... but only if you're a mage. If you come across some other body parts, save them for Ignus, too.

How do I get into the Modron Maze?

See the Modron Maze section of the walkthrough for complete details.

How do I get into the Player's Maze?

There are two ways of doing this. The first and easiest way is to go to Cathedral, located in the Alley of Dangerous Angles. Speak to the priest, ask about his religion and agree to become a disciple. As soon as you exit the Alley of Dangerous Angles, the Lady of Pain will appear and boot your scarred ass into the Player's Maze.

The second way is a little more tedious. Get the Lady of Pain doll from Pharod's Vault or buy it from the Curiosity Shoppe. Go to a fairly populated area, like the middle of Clerk's Ward where there are lots of people standing around. Proceed to mock or worship the doll. Be warned that doing this will change your alignment. Mock or worship the doll about 50 times; as soon as you try to exit the area, the Lady of Pain should come and punish you. Be warned that if you do this a second time after you piss off the Lady of Pain, it will be a permanent death.

Got questions? Send any additions or questions to Kraal. Please do not send me any bug reports, as I can't do anything about them, either.
