I've duked it out with the onslaught of cranium rats. After you kill /a lot/ of them, they call off the attack...essentially ending the fight (a truce) and telling you that you are free to go (can't remember the exact words). The game doesn't give you an opportunity to kill all those guys in the walls. So basically, it's impossible to kill all of them.
